Reba – Belgian Shepherd

I couldn’t be happier with my decision to send our 6 month old Shepherd puppy to Susan. Our Belgian Shepherd, Reba, was an absolute handful and more than we could handle training correctly for a dog of her intelligence. I was desperate and looking for guidance. When I had my first conversation with Susan I could not have been more comfortable. Susan genuinely cared about the concerns I had with my puppy and offered general advice off the bat. Susan was up front and honest about her methods and general training philosophy. Her methods come from a place of expertise, genuine love for dogs and compassion.

Reba spent three weeks with Susan and came home a different dog. Susan was exceptional with communication the entire time our puppy was with her. She sent constant communication of her progress and videos of what they had been working on. The best part of Susan’s program was the amount she had us involved with our puppies training. She had us join on walks and public outings to help teach us what she had been working on with Reba.

Susan’s caring and genuine demeanor as a trainer was more than we could ask for. Since our puppy has been home she has been a different dog for the better. She is confident, willing and comfortable. Susan has been available for follow ups, all questions and reinforcement trainings as needed.

We look forward to Reba spending time with Susan in the future and could not be happier with the confident dog she gave us. We are so thankful we found Susan.

Buddy

I bought a puppy who turned out to be aggressive and afraid of people, animals, sounds-everything. A friend referred to me Susan Del Signore, the owner of NewDogs-Old Trix of Tucson. I called Susan and she had me fill out a detailed application and made an appointment for me to bring Buddy to meet with her. She spent almost two hours working with him and then scheduled a time when she was free to take him for training – she trains one dog at a time – and he went to live with her for six weeks. She considered him a severe fear case. She worked with him daily – taking him on daily walks, outings, meeting all kinds of new people, new situations – even restaurants. She gave me daily reports and videos – and invited me to come out whenever I could to join them on their outings. She took him to a grooming place twice where she bathed him and helped him through the process. She even gave him swimming lessons – so he isn’t afraid of our pool. Buddy loves her and her dogs – and I now take him to Susan’s home for weekly “pack walks” that she offers to all dogs she has trained – a great way to keep your dog socialized. I would highly recommend Susan Del Signore to anyone wanting the perfect solution for any dog behavior – your dog will be loved and cared for and get perfectly trained!

Thanks, Susan!

Bindi

Professionalism, Quality, Reliability, Responsiveness, Value I am so happy and grateful to have found Susan of New Dogs old Trix to help us with my pup Bindi, a 1 year old (at the time of training) Australian Shepherd. We were having a lot of trouble training her on our own for some problem behavior, reactivity with dogs and humans being the main worry. After training with Susan, it’s like Bindi is a whole other dog! So much calmer and responsive, and so much less reactive. It’s a night and day difference. Our friends and family who met Bindi before and after training with Susan have commented on the difference. And with Susan’s guidance has helped my husband and myself become more confident and trained dog owners. I couldn’t recommend her enough!!

Susan did an excellent job reining in our super active pup with lots of praise, treats and an occasional reminder! Our lives became much easier because of the training.

Kylie- Border Collie Mix

If I could give 100 stars, I would give it to Susan at New Dogs Old Trix!!!

I have a 1 yo Border Collie mix and she was not properly trained as a puppy due to personal circumstances. My girl is very sweet/smart but obnoxious and would not listen to any command and was very stubborn. She chased everything (birds, gophers, trash blowing, tumbleweeds), jumped all over people, jumped on my other dog constantly, chewed anything and everything she could get in her mouth (almost 15 pairs of shoes ruined from her chewing) and would bolt through the front door anytime it was opened. I knew I needed to get her help and sought out services from Susan. My girl went for a 3 week board and train and it was worth every penny, plus more. Susan quickly identified my girl was insecure and worked on building confidence and controlling her excitement. Susan has resident dogs who also help with socialization and helping my dog understand boundaries.

Susan sent daily messages providing updates, sent videos and pictures as my dog was meeting milestones (going out in public, swimming, off leash walks). She would also call as a “check in” or if there was a concern. Susan trains 1 dog at a time, so my baby was getting all of her attention 24/7. I live far away and could not come as often as I would like but Susan was very accommodating with me coming for visits and also spending time with me showing me the commands, letting me try and showing me how to correct if my dog didn’t respond.

After 3 weeks I now have a WONDERFUL pleasant dog who is still sweet/funny but is not obnoxious. She knows how to relax when indoors (no more chewing shoes), walk off leash without running all over and chasing, no more jumping when company arrives, going out in public to stores and behaving, understands how to play with my older dog and most of all she has gained confidence!!! Since training my dog has been to the vet and they were impressed with her behavior, they couldn’t believe it was the same dog. I have also taken her to stores and walks and everyone comments on how well behaved my dog is and were just gushing with compliments!!

Once the 3 weeks were complete, Susan continues to follow up and is available for any questions or even if I just want to “brag” about how my dog is doing.

Susan has passion for what she does, she loves dogs and makes it SO fun for them, I don’t think the dogs even realize they are in training. Susan also offers pack walks for the dogs she has trained and I will be joining as often as I can. It is an incredible experience to watch all the dogs walk together, the owners are all saying the same commands and the dogs all know how to respond. Thank you doesn’t seem to be enough, but Thank You Susan for helping my baby!!!

Rowdy – Border Collie

We adopted a one year old Border Collie from a rescue, and realized immediately that he was so incredibly smart that we would be negligent if we didn’t get him some extensive training. He became reactive to workmen coming into our home after just a short while of being with us. After doing our homework, we decided on Susan del Signore, New Dogs – Old Trix. Her training has made the difference between a “nice dog” and confident, well behaved companion. Her methods are gentle yet firm and the response from our pup has been absolutely wonderful. Her in-home setting gave her 24/7 access to our dog in a normal setting, so she could see all of his behaviors, and it really paid off. Plus, she took him on “field trips” to get him used to other situations as well. AND, perhaps most important, she trained us as well! Best of all, her training includes follow up. She’s available to answer questions and help out whenever needed. My husband and I highly recommend Susan del Signore.

Mag (R) – Heeler mix

Our heeler, Blue, was first trained by Susan in 2011 and came home a completely different dog. Throughout the years, he has retained almost all of the commands that Susan initially taught him. We brought Blue back for a brief retraining after he developed some leash reactivity, as well as our new rescue heeler mix, Mag. I was a little nervous and apprehensive that Blue’s behavior was “set in stone” because he’s 7 years old, but it was no issue at all and he has been very receptive to Susan. Mag didn’t come with any particular obstacles or challenges to overcome, but she struggles with insecurity and is highly sensitive. Our once incredibly stubborn dog will now perform basic commands and is excited to play training games. We’ve received compliments on how much more confident Mag is and how she is able to settle and relax. We are able to settle and relax because she no longer barks at noises from 3 miles away! It has been and continues to be a real joy to work with Susan and I would highly recommend her to anyone introducing a new dog into the home, whether there are specific behavioral issues or not. I am much more confident in my handling abilities with my dogs and how to set them up for success, as well as tools to help when situations don’t go as planned. Susan is also knowledgeable and up-to-date about dog nutrition, and has caught a couple health concerns in my dogs to check out with my vet. I have gained so much more than a dog training event. I have learned so many games and tools to keep the training process going and Susan has continued to help me with new concerns. I love that she genuinely cares about my dogs as if they were her own. Thank you so much for all you have done and continue to do for Blue and Mag!!!

Denver - Golden Retriever

Denver – Golden Retriever

Susan is the best. We did some class training with our Dog Denver, and not much had changed before meeting Susan. When complaining about our dog’s behavior to a friend, she recommended New Dogs – Old Trix. It was just what we needed for our 1.5 yr. old golden retriever. Before going to New Dogs – Old Trix our dog was unable to settle down, would put everything he found in his mouth, put his paws on the counter tops and take food, pull when walking, jump on people when they came over….and the list goes on. Once we got him back he was a much better behaved dog. We are able to walk him off leash, he is much better on leash (the kids can even walk him), if he does pick something up once we give the command “out” he drops it and does not run (it use to be a game to him). We can even take him to stores, which I would have never done in the past. Not only did she train Denver, she trained us 🙂 She set us up for success when we brought Denver home. She included us in the training process, and was patient with our boys as they wanted to help. You can tell she loves what she does. She went above and beyond with our dog. She made a probiotic as he was having belly issues, brushed him, and even bathed him. We received videos and photos while she had him as well. If we ever get another dog, we will be sure to take it straight to Susan. I highly recommend Susan!!! New Dogs – Old Trix is well worth the investment!

Max dog training

Max, Golden Retriever

We bought a 10 week old Golden Retriever puppy, we had not had the puppy experience in over 30 years but had just lost our most recent rescue Golden, I wanted to start from scratch after having a number of rescue dogs. He was a wonderful little guy, great personality and full of energy and…out of control. We enrolled in two puppy classes that were very good but we were still having lots of behavioral problems such as chewing on everything (socks, shoes, sandals, toilet paper, Kleenex’s, paper towels, and irrigation drip line), and then running off with them, pretty frustrating. We loved the little critter but were having real issues that we could not solve and decided that we needed a professional.

Through friends, we heard about Susan and New Dogs – Old Trix. Cathy set up an appointment for an evaluation and shortly after, Maxwell went to live with Susan. Within days she had done wonders and we looked forward to the daily videos and photos of his progress, it is truly amazing the transformation in just those first couple of days. After not seeing him for a week, we were invited over for our training session and to see him show off his new skills. Here I will mention my experience with horses and dogs, the trainer can do an exceptional job of training an animal but if the owner does not become a part of the training process, it will never be the success that it can and should be.
After the initial meeting, I would do the morning walk and observe her in action with Max, her two dogs (and usually a couple of others) so that I could learn how to effectively give commands without confusing him. After our early morning walk, she would spend some time with Maxwell and me reviewing his training and how I should follow through so that both he and I understood what was being asked of him.

After three weeks with Susan he came home and was a dramatically different dog. Don’t misunderstand, he was still a nine month old Puppy, but would no longer pick up items, when he did and I gave the “out” command, he would always drop it and has not once run off with it. I wanted a companion to walk with me daily and hike trails, this is the highlight, on leash he controls himself and off leash, responds to voice commands so well that he is a pleasure to be with. Yes, it is moderately expensive, but no training from a competent professional is cheap and you usually get what you pay for. This lady knows her business and it is training dogs. Most importantly, you have to be involved and take the time to continue the training regimen once your dog comes home. Susan is a friend now but that does not in any way affect my evaluation of her skills in training animals, she genuinely loves animals and treats them with respect and commands their obedience. During my walk with Maxwell this morning I was thinking just how much I owe Susan, Maxwell (it used to be The Monster) is now a wonderful companion to be around and we genuinely enjoy our time together. She made that difference.

Charlie, Yellow Lab dog training

Charlie, Yellow Lab

Not willing to put up with the hassles of new puppy, my husband and I adopted a rescue Labrador. Charlie came to us on his third home in only 3 1/2 years. He was a lovable dog but had some incredible behavior issues. We could not control him, could not walk him and actually feared that we would have to pass him along to someone else who was better suited for his needs.

We were referred to Susan. She not only spent time with both of us and Charlie but also came to our home and gave us private lessons until she was available to take him in a board and train situation. The dog that was returned to us was not the same dog. He was engaging and pleasant, obedient and happy. Susan taught us how to work with him, how to understand him and how to encourage and develop his sense of security.

We have had dogs for 25 years and always have them trained. Susan he has delivered, without a doubt, a completely different experience from anyone else. The psychological process that she uses is not only effective but more gentle than any prior technique. Without Susan, we would have felt like failures. We would not have been able to feel the true joy of our new dog. Charlie is smart and funny and now, well-adjusted. What we thought was a mistake has turned out to be one of the best dogs ever. We can’t thank her enough.

Susan trained both of my dogs, a terrier and a doodle and turned them from wild furry barking things to well-socialized, fun and obedient companions. Her off-leash training is amazing. My goal was to have dogs that were responsive to my commands, and Susan accomplished that and more. We take our dogs to outdoor coffee shops and through malls and they know how to behave. We walk them on desert trails and they don’t stray or chase feral animals. We enjoy them every minute we spend with them because of what Susan was able to accomplish.

Mr. Knightly – Standard Poodle

I have an “extra-large” standard poodle, now 2 years old, who is sweet, lovable, and smart. As a puppy, I thought I could train him myself, but as he grew leaps and bounds daily, I had difficulty controlling him. So I hired a puppy trainer in Chicago, who did teach him to walk on a leash, but he still chased any critter in site and was unfriendly with people and other dogs. When he was 1 year old, I moved to Tucson for the winter (2016) and enrolled him in a two week, intensive training program in Sierra Vista. Yes, after that he followed basic commands, walked well on a leash, and completely avoided other dogs and people, but he had lost his spark and personality. Wanting my dog back, I didn’t follow through with the harsh treatment he had received at Sierra Vista. So, of course, his “not-so-great” behaviors returned. Back in Tucson this winter (2017), I found (though the recommendation of a friend) New Dogs – Old Trix. Reluctant at first to put him in another intensive training program, after meeting Susan, the owner and trainer, I was optimistic. She seemed extremely knowledgeable, was friendly, yet very professional, the environment seemed right and my dog, now weighing almost 80 pounds, I had to do something.

The training program with Susan at New Dogs – Old Trix was, in a word, outstanding. Not only did she succeed in eliminating all of his “not so great” behaviors, like jumping on people, pulling on the leash, chasing every critter in site, being aggressive toward other dogs and humans, she did it with love and grace, wanting the best for my dog. She provided daily updates on how he was doing, with phone calls and video clips, invited me to join in training (which I did), used positive techniques (i.e., treats for positive behavior rather than negative blasts of electric current for unwanted ones), and encouraged play with her own dogs (who are lovely). She took him to stores and restaurants, where he learned to behave like a human! Training is now finished, and my giant poodle is not only as lovable and sweet as he always was, he also is well behaved. On our walks every day (usually off leash on Tucson trails, walking only a few feet in front of me as he was trained to do), he ignores the lizards, always checks back to see where I am and, if I stop, he runs toward me with passion. I am so, so grateful to Susan. She is, indeed, an expert trainer and if your dog is having any issue like mine did, I recommend her most highly!

Skye - Golden Lab

Skye – Golden Lab

I highly recommend New Dogs-Old Trix. My young Labrador retriever received amazing training. I had an energetic, out of control young dog at the same time my husband was very ill. Susan gave us the tools to keep the training effective after our dog transitioned home. Our lives were forever changed by having a well behaved and socialized dog who could be with my husband during his last months.

Trigger - German Shepherd

Trigger – German Shepherd

Susan did a good job with our difficult German Shepherd. The dog had been through various owners and rescue situations and lacked a sense of trust and socialization skills. She put order in his life, making him far more manageable and better able to deal with people and other dogs. A very important part of Susan’s training is the follow-up, and she has given us plenty of help above and beyond the completion of the board-and-train period. This continues to be an extremely important factor allowing us to properly maintain and continually improve our dog’s training level. A big thanks for everything!

Susan kept both dogs for several weeks, but separately. She worked on the older dog’s aggressiveness and gave me hints and tools to keep her under control. She is much calmer since her stay with Susan and plays more appropriately with the puppy. She trained the puppy out of cringing whenever he was presented with new people or situations. He can now greet strangers, go into stores or walk through people with no problems. She has given me tools too get and keep him calm. Both dogs absolutely love her, so you know everything was done with kindness. Can’t recommend her too highly.

Maya - Miniature American Shepherd

Maya – Miniature American Shepherd

I was in over my head when I decided to get, not one but two Miniature American Shepherd puppies. I knew we had chosen an active and very smart breed, but I had no idea the difficulties I would have training them. Our male puppy, Max, was especially active and out of control. We sent him to Susan at New Dogs – Old Trix after looking into all of our options and after using two other trainers. She was recommended by a friend and we liked the one on one attention and that the training continues throughout the day and in a home situation. The difference in the behavior of Max after three weeks was incredible so we decided we had to send our female puppy too. Maya was so different from Max. She needed training too, but needed to be handled completely different as she is fearful and timid. Well after three weeks she came back more confident and obedient. Susan also takes a lot of time training the owners, so when you get your dogs back, you know how to handle them. Her advice and suggestions are always available and I know I can always contact her to ask training questions in the future. I continue to meet Susan for outings with the dogs and we have become great friends. I would highly recommend Susan for any dog and owner that needs training. She is truly amazing and loves what she does.

Perry – Schnoodle

Susan was awesome with the training of my dog! I was very impressed with her skills and dedication. She not only trains the dog but she takes them out to be socialized. I wanted a camping dog that I could let off leash and be sure she would not wander far and came back when called. I now have that dog! She also has learned manners which is very important when greeting people and other dogs. I highly recommend Susan.

Mickey Hanoka

Mickey – Terrier Mix

New Dogs -Old Trix provided excellent training for my dog Mickey AND for me. Susan concentrated on issues I had with Mickey and I’m so pleased that he comes when called now, even when engaged with other dogs or is in an open space where he has the chance to run if he chooses to. That one thing has made both our lives so much better but he is much less timid and fearful now and enjoys life more. Just wish I could make the trip from Illinois with my other dog Maggie! Thank you Susan.

Susan was awesome with my miniature American Shepard. These are active dogs and I was in over my head. She not only trains the dog, but the owner as well. She continues to provide support and answer my questions. She is always available to me and made a word of difference in my puppies behavior. She even taught him to swim and now he is enjoying dock diving where as before he wouldn’t even swim! He is much more obedient, happy and confident. I would highly recommend Susan as your dog trainer.

Gus - Shepherd Mix

Gus – Shepherd/Hound Mix

Susan Del Signore of New Dogs – Old Trix is a very gifted dog trainer. I highly recommend her to any dog owner in need of behavior assistance. My young dog, Gus, recently became afraid of many things and reacted in negative ways. Suddenly, he was lunging toward strangers, other dogs, and cars. His behavior was unpredictable and worrisome. Susan was the answer. Gus stayed with Susan for three weeks, and during that time, I would receive daily videos or pictures of his progress. The individual attention she gave to Gus was outstanding and remarkable. Susan’s gentle calm training turned my dog’s behavior around. I now have a dog that is focused and comfortable out and about in the world. It has been life changing for both of us. Thank you, Susan!

Bella Kona Together -2

Bella & Kona – Yellow & Chocolate Labs

Susan trained our two Labrador Retriever puppies and did an amazing job with them. In just ten 10 days of training, Susan was able to get them to stay in their crates without barking excessively and eliminate several bad habits. Our chocolate lab, Kona, was a handful and I never would have imagined in such a short time we’d gain a very manageable fun and loving dog. We have two well-mannered dogs that do wonderful on and off the leash now. She was a perfect fit for our family and I guarantee she will be for you as well. She has mad skills and will make your life much easier on you in a very short time. She is great about updating you during the training process and will give you peace of mind that your fur babies are in great hands! Angel

Angel – Aussie Shepherd

Susan took my hyper, crazy, disobedient puppy and returned someone else’s dog. That’s the only way I can figure out how she did it. I have a 6 month old Aussie, named Angel, that was terrorizing my other senior dogs, me, the yard and the house. Angel is very smart and knew how to control all of us. After trying to do some basic training myself, I realized it was over my head and signed up for a puppy class. Before going to class I outlined all of the issues I was having with Angel. Trainer said, “No Problem, we can help you with all of that.” Second class and the trainer was yelling “don’t let your dog do that…” No instructions, no help, waste of money. I was at my wits end as I loved Angel but could not go on with the way things were.

After searching I met with Susan of New Dogs-Old Trix. Susan worked extensively with Angel in the areas of socialization, confidence building, “manners,” standard obedience, and so much more. Along the way she sent me videos and email updates of Angel’s progress. She had him sitting in place and he was happy to do it. He would stay as he was told when the doorbell rang, or someone knocked on the door, other dogs would walk in or out. Angel heels with or without a leash, even free walking he does not go too far away. A few of the amazing things she accomplished are: 1. Assured recall. Distracted or not, Angel actually comes when I call him. 2. Stay. I can tell Angel to sit, wait, then walk away, out of his sight. He will stay there until I tell him to come. 3. Leave it. Angel will immediately stop pestering my other dogs or stay away from something dangerous when I say leave it. 4. Calmly staying in the back seat when I’m driving. 5. He doesn’t rush in or out of the door. and 6. He behaves when going out in public!

However the thing that I absolutely appreciate the most is that I can put Angel in his “place,” tell him to stay, and I can actually eat dinner without him going crazy or making me feel guilty for not giving him my dinner!!!!!

Seriously, I have no clue what she did with my dog as the one she gave back to me is so much more enjoyable!

Thank you Susan.

Lucy-close-up-head-tilt

Lucy – German Shepherd

Susan provided seven days of in-home training for my German Shepherd. Lucy is 18 months old and a sweet dog, but she has high energy and high drive. I’m not as young as I used to be and I was having trouble controlling all of that. Susan installed some very useful commands, such as leave it, back, out and off. I had done the basics of sit, stay, come and down, but she was undependable in her responses and easily distracted. Since I got her back she is much more focused and much easier to direct. Susan gave me some techniques for getting her as tired as possible on walks without tiring myself out too much. I couldn’t be happier. I am confident that going forward I can keep up what Susan installed. She did it all with kindness and a positive approach. I had taken Lucy to another trainer who used fear as a motivator and I didn’t want to do that again. Going forward, Susan will be getting all of my dogs!

Zunie

Zunie – Aussie Shepherd

Zunie, my Aussie, stayed with Susan for 10 days of training. Susan provided videos of Zunie on walks with other dogs and in public. I could see that she was not pulling on the leash, sitting and staying when told to and following the lead of the person walking her. She took Zunie to a Farmer’s Market, Home Depot, retail stores so I got to see the training results in action which I loved and even shared with friends. Zunie lived with Susan’s 3 dogs in her home so she had constant interaction with those dogs. She was also around additional dogs on the Sunday walks, which we are continuing. This way Susan can correct me and Zunie. Susan is concerned with results even after the boarding is over. She’s been a great resource for what are healthy treats and where to buy them, what leashes, collars are the best. Susan also provided a write up of Zunie’s results and info on healthy weights for dogs and what human foods are unhealthy for them.

Believe me, I learned a lot from Susan of what to do and not do. Actually, it is me that needs training. Zunie is the smart one. It’s the same as raising a child; it takes experience. I would highly recommend Susan’s training and boarding. She really cares about our pets. Susan stays abreast of news/research in dog training and confers with other professionals in the field
Zunie and I would highly recommend Susan’s services.

Harlee-and-Mica-Sept-2015

Harlee – Pit Bull Mix; Mica – German Shepherd

When we got two puppies (different mothers, same household, 3 days apart) about 3 years ago, I expected I’d be raising two perfect dogs. I employed all the advice from books, TV shows, friends, dog training classes, clickers, collars, you name it, and for some reason, our two little puppies grew up to be misbehaved…putting it mildly. Enter Susan and New Dogs – Old Trix. She was recommended by a trainer in Flagstaff.

From reading testimonials on her website, she seemed almost too good to be true. I was skeptical, but from her very first email, and the subsequent evaluation at her home, I knew she was absolutely that good and all the great things others had written were absolutely true. Susan is calm, assertive, passionate, professional, patient, competent, persistent, generous, and most of all, gentle and loving toward the animals. She’s all that with the owners as well. Susan and her team, her 4-dog pack, transformed our maniacs into sweet, relaxed, confident dogs. She saw that one dog is social, but not obedient, the other is obedient but fearful and anti-social. We were trying to train them both in the same way.

During the individual board and train, all the behavior issues got worked out. Each dog came back calm and relaxed, and responded to the basic commands that keep the dog safe, and fun to be with. Susan did her job, and then it was time for us to do ours. They learned new ways to behave, and our job was to reinforce those new ways and have them master their new behavior. We weren’t left on our own to do this. Susan was/is always available for support and guidance as we master OUR new behavior as pack leaders.

It’s been about a month since the “board and train” and every day we learn things about ourselves as we become fluent in dog language and every day our dogs continue to trust us as their leaders.

We could say that Susan performed miracles, but really there weren’t any miracles. She worked and trained and developed long and hard to become “one with the dog”, and she gave us the tools we needed to continue the process.

Our dogs trust our leadership and are on the fast track to becoming the dogs we’ve always wanted: calm, happy, well-adjusted members of our family.

We started calling Susan our Sensei ( Japanese term used to show respect to someone who has achieved a certain level of mastery in an art form or skill). We highly recommend New Dogs – Old Trix to anyone who cares about their dog.

Susan, we thank you, our dogs thank you, and every dog you have ever touched or will touch thanks you.

Emma – Boxer Mix

Susan was highly recommended to me by friends who had her work with their dogs in the past. I had recently adopted a 2 yr old rescue boxer mix, Emma, that not only needed work on general obedience but she displayed excessive aggression towards other dogs. Emma was proving a challenge for me to address these issues on my own. After just one week in Susan’s care I saw not only a significant improvement in Emma’s general obedience skills but a dramatic change in her demeanor towards other dogs. Although I still have work to do with Emma’s overall social skills, Susan has gotten her (and me) to a point that I can now continue her training with success.

Whether you want to just sharpen your dogs obedience training or have a particularly difficult problem dog, let Susan work her magic and you won’t be disappointed.

Kept me up-to-date with how training was going. Judge is sooo much better. Listens more, reacts more quickly to commands.

Siblings Hud & Daisy

Siblings Hud & Daisy – American Staffordshire Terriers

Susan provided intensive training with our two dogs. Our dogs learned new commands, socialization with other dogs, and proper behavior in public places.

The training with Susan has been amazing! Our two dogs, Hud and Daisy, are 4 year old British Staffordshire Terrier siblings. We discovered that having siblings can be more challenging than dogs from different litters. They both have great personalities and dispositions but together, they had a tendency to be disobedient and challenging.

Susan’s training was perfect for Hud and Daisy. Susan taught them new commands as well as socialization skills with her own dogs. The socialization proved very helpful for Daisy as she is somewhat fearful of other dogs and new situations. She also taught my husband and me how to communicate with Hud and Daisy. We learned the new commands and how to reward the positive behavior.

Susan’s training is based on positive reinforcement and fun. As follow up to the training, we participate in group walks with Susan and other clients. The training has changed our household. The dogs are more confident and relaxed and so are we!

Barbie

Barbie – Pit Bull

We are extremely satisfied with the results of the New Dogs – Old Trix 10-day board and train program for our dog, Barbie. We adopted Barbie from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in August 2013. From the beginning she got along well with us, our 7 year old daughter, our cats and our other dog. She took basic obedience classes and did well except for when it came to interacting with other dogs (aside from our other dog). Whenever she would see another dog she would go crazy. She would bark, growl, snarl, whine, pull on the leash and lunge. I was unable to walk her and our other dog at the same time. When we would go for walks I was constantly scanning the street ahead to see if any other dogs were coming. When I would see another dog coming, I would try to duck into a driveway or change course so as to avoid a confrontation. One morning this past June we encountered another dog on our walk. We ducked into a driveway to wait for the dog and her owner to pass. As the dog walked by Barbie started going crazy and I could barely restrain her because I was slipping on the gravel driveway. The poor owner of the other dog appeared terrified.

When we got home from the walk I called New Dogs – Old Trix to arrange for an evaluation; it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I stopped walking Barbie on that day and didn’t walk her again until after she completed the board and train program. In the 2 months since Barbie completed the program, our dogs have been on more walks than they were on in the entire previous year. Neighbors we see on our walks routinely comment on how well Barbie is doing and how far she has come. She is able to pass by other dogs without incident. I can stop and have conversations with other neighbors who are walking their dogs. In fact, she will often lay down (completely ignoring the other dog) while the humans carry on a conversation. Our walks are relaxing and enjoyable now as opposed to being stressful and embarrassing. We can’t thank Susan enough for the wonderful, transformative work that she has done with Barbie! We highly recommend New Dogs – Old Trix!

Izzy

Izzy – Beagle Mix

Susan kept Izzy for five days. When we dropped her off, Izzy had no training and no socialization. She came back totally respectful of our other dogs. She now doesn’t bark or bother our horses or mules. No more jumping on our counters, pool table and furniture. She had learned basic commands of wait, leave it, back, let’s go, etc. She is now so much fun to have as part of our family and in turn, we are not frustrated.

We were so impressed with the communication and follow-up that we have with Susan.

In addition, she showed just how much she cares about these dogs – when she had our second dog, Ember, she saw there was a potential problem with an illness and after we discussed her symptoms, it was decided that I would pick her up and have her checked by my Vet. Susan returned my check, even though Ember had been there for almost two days. Turned out, Ember had Valley Fever and is now on medication.

We will definitely go back to Susan to continue her training. Susan is always available to discuss any additional questions we have had.

Lea

Lea – Rottweiler

I took in Lea, a two-year-old female Rottweiler three years ago. She was a smart, sweet dog who got along with people but who had been left alone a lot and was an escape artist who tended to be destructive in the house. With time, I got most of the problems under control, but last summer she killed a cat. I started taking her to a dog park, which she loved, but after a couple of months she attacked a small dog there (who was unhurt). There might have been a small amount of provocation that day, but none whatsoever for her attack on another small dog there the next day (who was also unhurt).

I had to do something if I was going to keep her so I joined Angie’s list to get information about dog trainers. I learned that Lea’s problem is that she has a strong prey drive. She said Lea would never be completely safe unsupervised with small dogs or cats but that she could get much better. Susan said she could do the second type of training. I chose Susan because one of her Angie’s List reviews described a dog that seemed to be a lot like Lea. We had three hours of training last week and have made amazing progress. Susan took Lea through a series of commands — let’s go, leave it, wait, sit — giving her more and more freedom. We went by barking dogs, which usually sets Lea off, and she stayed quietly with us, off leash. I am now practicing what Susan taught me.

I was hesitant to use a shock collar, but Susan’s approach is to use the least amount of shock the dog can feel. She had me feel the level she chose for Lea and it was only the amount I feel when I touch the light switch after walking on the rug. I feel that rather than being cruel to Lea when I use it, I’m just getting her attention. I can also use just the vibration button on the device, and I do that when the infraction is minor.

Susan and I are now exchanging emails about Lea’s progress. We may have another session in my neighborhood where Susan can help with the problems I face on the daily walk with Lea. Susan is enthusiastic, loves dogs (and Lea loves her and the training), and professional. She explains what she is doing and is patient with my lapses. She is altogether a joy to work with and I recommend her without reservation.

Arnold

Arnold

My Son in Washington state found Susan on-line and was very impressed with the way she would return his E Mails regarding his parents’ rescue dog, Arnold.

She taught Arnold to sleep in and enjoy his crate. He learned to socialize with other dogs and people. He learned to come when called, helped him with his anxiety problems, taught to heel, taught to walk without a leash and with a leash and many more things…

Everything went well and we will take Arnold back to Susan for boarding she is excellent with animals and cares about them and the people who own them. Susan knows her work as a trainer. Thank you again Susan for your help and knowledge.

Housemates Terra & Apollo

Both my dogs received off-leash training as well as socialization. My puppy also received crate training.

The off-leash training is great. I can now walk both of my dogs by myself with almost no issue. My puppy still has a few issues with meeting new people and dogs but it is greatly improved. He also goes into his crate when told with no complaints. My older dog still has an issue with jumping on people but the trainer was upfront with this point that this would be a work in progress after she returned.

Siblings Emma & Captain

Siblings Emma & Captain – Boxers

I have two eight month old boxer puppies trained by Susan, one at a time and was really happy with the results.

Susan evaluates your dog before agreeing to train them. She trains one dog at a time and keeps them in her home 24 hours a day while they are being trained. She has four dogs of her own that are nonreactive and utilizes them during training to expose your dog to others and learn social skills. She has acreage and enclosed areas outside plus she takes the dogs for long walks, training your dog as they go. She crate trains your dog and keeps them in her home at night.

When you pick up your dog, she will take you on a walk. Susan also invites you to bring your dog to her Sunday morning walks as a refresher course as often as you like.

The difference before and after training was night and day. They come when called, don’t jump on people, get along with other dogs and in general are a lot nicer to be with. I highly recommend Susan. Her dogs are all rescue dogs. She really cares for animals. She is also a certified dog trainer. We are extremely satisfied with the results.

Ruby

Ruby – German Shepherd

Susan took our 6 month old German Shepherd into her pack and in approximately three days had her crate trained, basic obedience instilled and began the process of socializing her with other dogs. She taught our dog basic behavior for walks and related the dos and don’ts to us as owners.

The results we have attained have exceeded my expectations. We now have a well-adjusted, stable dog that is truly a pleasure. The entire experience has been thoroughly rewarding. We have seen great results in the level of training and more importantly, the eagerness to do more. Our level of confidence has grown as owners in working with our dog and have Susan as an available resource to help us through any obstacles. Her advice and suggestions have proven invaluable. I would highly recommend New Dogs-Old Trix to any dog owner.

Chance

Chance – Pit Bull Mix

We adopted a two-year old dog; very sweet dog, but very rambunctious. Susan did a very good job training. We met with her and she immediately agreed to schedule in-home training with us. She followed up with us via phone and email during and after our training sessions. She even sent some helpful videos.

I highly recommend her.

LuLu

LuLu – Pit Bull

Susan provided intensive training for my dog, LuLu, who was fearful of other dogs.

My husband and I rescued LuLu almost a year before seeking out Susan’s help. We got her from a friend who pulled her from PACC when she was set to be euthanized. LuLu was a very sweet dog, but it was obvious that she had been beaten, possibly starved, and was under a lot of stress. She was timid when we first got her during a variety of situations, like when on a car ride, getting a bath, or even when I was doing laundry. But after a month or so, she started to become more confident in all situations except for one: walks.

Because we lived in a small townhouse, walks were my primary means of exercising LuLu and my other large dog, Ricky. When we went on walks, LuLu was on high alert and pulled, but would do O.K. (relatively speaking), until we came across another dog. Whenever we passed a house that had a dog or passed another dog out on a walk, LuLu would freak out and become hysterical. She would drop to the ground, pull, bark, and make a horrible sound that sounded like screaming. I did my best to keep her calm, but she was in such a state of hysteria, that there was nothing that I could do to pull her out of her of it.

Over time, I tried tons of different things to help, but nothing worked. I bought gentle leader head collars, easy walk harnesses, prong collars, etc. I tried yelling, I tried ignoring, I tried clicker training and using treats, but nothing helped. Walks became progressively more and more stressful for me, and I began to dread them, especially when my husband was not home to help. Finally, I started to notice a change in my other dog, Ricky, when we would see a dog on a walk. He started to bark and pull as well. This particularly upset me because he had always left other dogs alone on walks before we had gotten LuLu. I was worried that if we didn’t help LuLu soon, that Ricky would develop the same sorts of behaviors and I wouldn’t be able to control my dogs anymore. The whole thing was very upsetting because I love my dogs, and I felt that their behavior on walks wasn’t representative of their behavior the majority of the time, and that other people perceived them as aggressive or scary, when I knew that they really weren’t that way.

That was when I finally called Susan, and I am so glad that I did. She was so friendly and understanding. I felt like she really listened and emphasized on that first phone-call, which was helpful because I felt like I hadn’t talked with anyone who understood what I was going through with LuLu. She arranged for me to come and have LuLu evaluated shortly after the call.

Susan provided me with a lot of help even during that first evaluation. She demonstrated some different things that I could work on with LuLu in between that first session and when LuLu would come for training. She even gave me a new collar for LuLu to help with her leash pulling that was very effective, but didn’t irritate her skin as some of the other collars had (I went home and bought one for Ricky too). Susan was very upfront about her recommendations and pricing, and I did not feel pressured that I had to take those recommendations. Unfortunately, my husband and I couldn’t afford more than five days of training even though Susan recommended more, but I never felt that she was upset about that or that she would provide LuLu with any less than the best training she could give.

When I dropped LuLu off for her training, I knew that she was in good hands. Susan promised to keep me posted on her progress, and I thought that meant maybe a quick email or phone call each day. But Susan really went above and beyond. She sent me several detailed emails and a bunch of videos of LuLu’s progress, and how she handled LuLu during difficult situations. I was so thrilled with the constant communication while LuLu was away, and it made me so happy to see her progress each day. I also really appreciated how Susan expressed affection for LuLu. She always told me what a good dog she was, how sweet she was, and how much she was enjoying her. That was so helpful for me, especially because I was upset by people on walks who previously perceived her as “aggressive” or “bad”.

When I picked LuLu up, it was amazing to see the progress that she had made in such a short time. She had been introduced to all of Susan’s dogs, and even a few others. Susan took my husband and I on a long walk with LuLu to show us her new skills and to help us to practice handling her so that we could continue LuLu’s training. It was really helpful because it provided us with practice under Susan’s supervision where she could give us feedback on the things we were doing well and what we could improve upon. The whole experience was so helpful, and it was so nice to see what Susan had done for LuLu.

After LuLu’s training, my husband and I decided to purchase an e-collar from Susan to continue with LuLu’s training and also to help with Ricky’s training. Even though she did not have a unit for 2 dogs, she researched our options and promptly sent me information on each of our different choices. She also arranged a time for me to bring LuLu back to show me how to use the new collar, as well as to introduce LuLu to another new dog and provide further socialization, at no extra cost.

Overall, I am so thrilled about my experience with Susan. In addition to really helping LuLu to become a more calm and confident dog, I felt as though she really cared about me, my husband, and LuLu. She really took the time to make sure that we understood what she did for LuLu and how, and how we could successfully continue LuLu’s training in the future. She also took the time to check in and communicate, and has checked up on LuLu’s progress since the training has been completed. I feel that I cannot ever express enough gratitude to Susan for what she has done for my LuLu, and for me. I now feel as though LuLu is truly on her way to recovery, and that I am more competent in my ability to help her on her journey there. I am also so happy to be able to take walks with my dogs again without feeling stressed or like they are a chore. Sadly, after completing training with Susan, we had to move out of state for my husband’s work. If this was not the case, I would definitely continue to take my dogs to Susan for training, and I would highly recommend that anyone who is considering training for their dog contact her as well.

Paisy

Paisy – Husky Mix

Evaluation of six month old puppy for adoption and rehoming. We had decided we needed to rehome the puppy and found out about this dog trainer, not where we could have her evaluated to ensure we selected the right home for her. The evaluation at New Dogs – Old Trix training facility took a little over and hour.

Susan, the owner and trainer, is truly amazing with dogs. She was professional every step of the way,

From the first phone call it was clear she uses enlightened and gentle training methods. I felt I could trust her based on her telephone assessment of a difficult situation with a six month old puppy we adopted at eleven weeks old. As a Siberian Husky mix, she is very smart and very sensitive, as well as in need of lots of exercise.

We had come to the conclusion that we needed to rehome her. Susan said she could already tell Paisy was likely to be adoptable on the phone. The phone evaluation proved true during the evaluation. It was very reassuring that we had not waited too long to get Paisy to a new home where she would get what she needed in her life.

That initial trust and hope only increased as we spoke and was validated at the moment we reached her home. Our dog connected with her patient and effective way of working with dogs. Our puppy truly was a “new dog” learning the classic “old trix” that every dog needs to know. Susan started with Paisy and immediately she “got” what was being asked of her. The big arena at her facility is just right for gentle training on the lead as well as some agility equipment! She “knew” our dog and her capacity better than we ever did.

I was able to adopt some of her training techniques to take home with me which will be very helpful to use in the interim until she gets her new home.

Susan had Paisy meet one her dogs without incident and we went for a walk. She walked our dog and let her dog walk off leash. Her dog’s behavior was impeccable. We went down the gravel side road from her house. It was pleasant for all of us.

We even walked by some horses so she could evaluate our dog around other animals,

We will be rehoming our dog. It would have been upsetting to say the least not to have obtained an evaluation from Susan.

Susan followed up after the appointments and is helping in any way she can.

Susan has a calling for this work and I could not recommend her more highly.

Note — Paisy was successfully rehomed.

Annie

Annie – Pit Bull

Susan trained my rescue dog in a five day program. Training sessions are individual; she trains only one dog during the training session so that your dog receives extensive attention. Training occurs in Susan’s private residence in the desert and incorporates her pack of four dogs modeling appropriate behaviors. Susan has training dogs live in her home with her pack and is on site throughout the training so that your dog is assured of companionship.

Susan’s approach is an ideal method for a dog with anxiety issues learning to adjust to a new environment and owner. Susan’s services include at least two walks daily at 2 miles per walk. The environment is beautiful, immaculately clean, and provides a combination of stimulation and respite for the dogs. Training addressed obedience, behavior, commands, and socialization with Susan’s dogs and neighbor’s dogs during the walks. Susan patiently explains canine behavior which is most helpful for a new dog owner. The training was a completely positive experience for me and my dog.

Susan was responsive to my concerns and generously gave her time as issues arose. I highly recommend Susan to other dog owners as I have been extremely satisfied with the results. I have a happy, well-adjusted dog that is an absolute joy thanks to Susan. Susan is a dog trainer par excellence!!!

Summer

Summer – German Shepherd

We contacted New Dogs – Old Trix for direction and advice on how to help our 1 year old White German Shepherd overcome her fears of human adults, unfamiliar objects, and sounds.

Following a 5-day session, we had follow-up visits for pack walks with our dog to maintain socialization and receive training tips and suggestions.

We left our dog for 10 days during our vacation. Excellent care!

Returned last month for a training session on proper use of e-collar to correct an inappropriate aggressive barking problem. This has been a huge turn-around for our dog.

We have had a very positive experience with Susan (New Dogs – Old Trix). We learned about New Dogs- Old Trix from an acquaintance who highly recommended Susan’s abilities in working with dogs having behavioral issues and/or fears. Our White German Shepherd was approximately 4 months old when we adopted her. She was very fearful of unknown objects, sounds, and adults, especially men. We attempted to rid her fears for the next year by socialization, but we could not seem to find a way to pull her away from her human fear and gain trust of strangers and even our neighbors she sees frequently. Children and other dogs were not a problem. The human adult fear was increasing; we were at our wits end and needed help.

May 2012 we contacted Susan with “New Dogs – Old Trix” who is an extremely knowledgeable and gifted dog trainer! She is articulate and knows how to transfer her knowledge of dog psychology into terms and situations for the dog owner to understand by showing the owner hands-on, how to modify their own body language, and training methods to help their dog. After a “meet & greet” which was complimentary to ascertain compatibility and acceptance, we returned for a scheduled date and left our dog with Susan for 5 days. I was anxious about leaving our dog only because she had not been left with anyone since we had adopted her. The surroundings and living situation are serene, no pens and I quickly learned that my initial anxiety about leaving our dog was without merit. Our dog stayed in Susan’s house with her own dogs that are so sweet and very well behaved. Susan is very conscientious; keeping constant tabs on the dogs’ behavior and body language as well as their needs (the dogs are not put away and forgotten after training and walks). Every day Susan took our dog on 2 desert pack walks and she communicated with us via email with in-depth descriptions of our dog’s progress and any concerns. She also kept us informed by taking videos of pack walks showing our dogs’ interactions with the other dogs and sent to us via email which was a delight. During the desert pack walks, the dogs are enjoying themselves while Susan maintains control by teaching and reinforcing basic commands.

Since the training in May of 2012 our dog returned to stay with Susan for 10 days while we vacationed and our dog was very well cared for and loved. We especially enjoyed seeing our dog having the time of her life in the videos Susan would send during our time away. We have returned several times to join in on the early morning pack walks to keep our dog socialized with other well behaved dogs. Last month we contacted Susan for hands-on training session for my husband and me using an e-collar as an additional training tool for an inappropriate barking problem.

We are extremely happy with the advice and care our dog has received and highly recommend Susan (New Dogs – Old Trix) as an accomplished and compassionate trainer. Finally, I would say that what stands out the most is her love and patience for all dogs, even those who are especially challenging, her compassion all coupled with her understanding of how dogs think and what makes them react favorably or positively.

Hannah

Hannah – Cocker Spaniel

Hannah, my 8 month old Cocker Spaniel, had several behavioral problems and I wanted to address them now, before they became deep-rooted. So she attended the Board & Train Program at New Dogs – Old Trix. Hannah lived with Susan for four days, in her home, where she had Susan’s undivided attention. Susan was able to break Hannah’s bad habits in a few days. Hannah was trained in social skills and walking skills as well as good behavior. Susan provided daily updates via email and made two videos of Hannah walking with a pack of dogs. After the training ended, Susan did follow up sessions to make sure I was able to communicate with my puppy and keep the good behavior going. She continues her support via email, phone calls, and Sunday morning pack walks.

Hannah is 10 months old now and she is a joyful, well-behaved dog. I am thoroughly pleased with her training at New Dogs – Old Trix. What makes Susan so special is that she recognizes the need to train the dog owner. Susan spent a great deal of time with me on the phone and in follow up sessions at no extra charge. Susan cares about each and every dog she trains. She maintains an on-going relationship with me and is easily accessible to answer questions as well as review some of the training lessons. I highly recommend New Dogs – Old Trix for any type of dog training.

Byrd

Byrd

Byrd came into our lives from the Southern Arizona Humane Society in October 2012. Just under a year and sweet as a button, she had almost no social skills with other dogs and was an over-excited puppy. A quick learner, she easily picked up basic commands, but still had difficulty focusing and listening to us, especially when another dog was present. Byrd would detract and react on our walks when we either passed a dog behind a fence or on the leash.

We are so thankful to have Susan take Byrd into her pack and into her heart to help Byrd gain the confidence and skills to overcome this hurdle. Byrd now easily walks on a leash, has greatly toned down her reactions to other dogs and can touch noses respectfully, and most always listens to us when we give a command.

Thank you Susan for all your hard work! We just can’t wait to wake up every morning and go on a walk with our Byrdie.

Cooper

My 6-year-old can now easily walk Cooper!

Susan is a very kind, compassionate and effective canine trainer. Her evaluations are spot-on and her methods really work! Not only did she transform my puppy’s behavior, but she taught me how to continue his training. Our family welcomed Cooper into our home only a few months before learning that my husband would be deployed for over 6 months and that I would require back surgery ASAP. With my husband gone and trying to care for our 2 children, all while recovering from back surgery, training a new puppy was more than I could handle. Perhaps if Cooper was a Chihuahua the situation would have been manageable. But Great Danes grow very quickly and require lots of exercise. I was actually ready to give him another home, but my kids adamantly protested. After listening to my plight, Susan agreed to meet with our family and discuss our options. To our great relief, she assured that he was completely trainable and that she was certain that she could help. After only 1 week in her charge, Cooper was confident and “tame”. She explained her methods fully and “trained” my kids and I how to continue to work with Cooper. I highly recommend Susan’s services to anyone needing help with their dog.

Jezebel

Jezebel – Plott Hound

Few dogs were as wanted as our puppy – a purebred, female, red-brindle Plott hound that we drove all the way to New Mexico to pick up and bring home. She was my husband’s dream dog, and he named her Jezebel. It never entered our minds that we would not be able to manage a puppy; afterall, there were no children in residence, no other pets, and a full-time stay at home retired owner!

Within three months, Jezzie was in a choke collar in an attempt to control her constant nipping at my feet, legs, and clothes. She would charge me whenever the mood would strike her and soon was always on the leash in the house. While nicer to my husband, she was unmanageable in almost all situations – we were at the end of our rope when one of my husband’s friends suggested we talk to his trainer, Susan, at New Dogs – Old Trix. We called her that day.

After a 9 day stay with Susan, we picked up the wonderful, well-behaved dog we now have. Jezzie has become a pleasure to be around. Susan has taught all 3 of us much needed lessons that continue as I write this. Susan does follow-up calls, has come to our house, and responds almost immediately to my questions via e-mail. She is, in my estimation, a kind, in-tune, miracle worker, and it is my pleasure to recommend her.

Phoebe

Phoebe – Weimaraner Mix

We wish we had come to Susan first before wasting time with other trainers who did more harm than good with our sensitive, insecure and sweet Phoebe.

We were reluctant to let go and place Phoebe in an immersive boarding program yet it really worked. Phoebe was transformed from a skittish, reactive dog into a calm, well-mannered lady under Susan’s expertise and socialization with her pack.

Susan immediately read Phoebe’s signals and worked on fixing the root cause of her behavioral problems. She is much happier and relaxed for it. We now understand this is the only way to move beyond the click & treat or dominate & control methods that failed in the past.

Susan’s flexibility and holistic approach set her above other trainers and her calm pack provide the ideal complement to achieving lasting results. Now we are encouraged to follow through with repetition and reinforcement after seeing the effectiveness of the program Susan mapped out for us. We are no longer stumbling around in the dark with conflicting advice from other trainers, books and videos.

Susan is absolutely the BEST!

Lottie

Lottie – English Bulldog

Lottie, our 21 month old English bulldog, has come back into our home a confident and obedient girl after being in Susan’s board & train program.

I acquired Lottie when she was a year old. She had no formal training and after 7 months together I found myself at a dead end with her. I was not getting through to her and felt very defeated.

I made a desperate phone call to New Dogs – Old Trix and spoke with Susan who was extremely understanding and empathic to my ordeal in a way that was genuine.

Through our journey with Lottie, Susan has been patient and helpful, she listens, I believe that’s the difference between a good trainer versus a great trainer, which Susan is.

I highly recommend her.

Sirius

Sirius

Susan is a life saver. My dog, Sirius, was very fearful, and would channel it into aggression towards people and other animals. I felt like I could not take my dog anywhere, or have people over to my apartment for fear that my dog might snap at them or worse. My dog was also extremely hyperactive despite multiple long walks a day, and would frequently tear up items in my house if I left him home alone, even for a few minutes. Sirius is a new dog after being trained by Susan. I no longer fear introducing him to new people or animals. Not only did Susan teach my dog how to socialize with other dogs and people, she also taught me how to handle him in situations where he feels uncomfortable. Sirius is significantly calmer when he meets new people or dogs.

My hyperactive dog is much calmer at home as well. He does not destroy anything when I leave him alone in the apartment. I recently adopted a kitten, and thanks to Susan’s training I do not have to worry about leaving the two pets alone together. Using what I learned from Susan, I was able to teach my dog to leave the cat’s food and litter box alone. If not for Susan, I would still be known at my apartment complex as the girl with the aggressive dog. Now dog owners who would avoid me before have no problems being near Sirius. Susan changed my, and my pet’s life.

Buddy

Buddy – Boxer

In order to help you understand how much Susan has helped me, I first need to give you some background on my dog, Buddy. He is a 75lb, 4 1/2 year old Boxer and I am his fourth owner, one of many facts I learned after I agreed to “adopt” him. His previous owners left him outside most of the time; he had no training, and was also intact. I insisted he must be neutered or I would not take him. Needless to say, he has a lot of energy and has a tendency to get bored easily, which leads to destructive behavior. I have the proof in the destroyed picture frames, remote control, lamp shades, etc. Since he had no training, he had no manners of any kind.

Susan kept Buddy for 5 days, during which time I went on a few walks with them in order to see his progress, it was amazing. He is able to walk off leash, come and/or wait when asked to, he can even walk past a house with five barking dogs and completely ignore them.

Susan has also helped train me, making sure I remain in control and in charge, which isn’t the easiest thing with a dog of this size, but we continue our training together every day.

I constantly have friends and family who met Buddy before his training tell me what a huge difference Susan’s training has made and I completely agree. I would recommend her to anyone and have over the past several months.

Shiloh

Shiloh – Belgian Shepherd

We have a beautiful Belgian Shepherd we rescued who had been traumatized earlier in her life. With the extreme behavioral issues she was displaying, we were faced with the decision to put her down. This decision was too unbearable. Sheer luck brought us to Susan who carefully listened to our dilemma and assured us that she could help.

We have worked with other dog trainers over the years and one of the many attributes that makes Susan stand out above the rest is her raw talent and ability to relate, communicate, and rehabilitate a troubled dog. She goes above and beyond to ensure successful training of not only the dog but the owners too! Shiloh has come back from the dark side and is now happy, confident and overcoming her demons.

Hi Robin,

It’s been a while since our last correspondence, but I just wanted to give you an update on Shan Shan (now Shiloh). It’s been 11 months since she became part of our family and it’s been rough. It became more and more apparent that Shiloh had been mistreated earlier in her life, was very traumatized and very anxiety ridden. I took her to a trainer that had trained the two other dogs I adopted from you (Morgan, 8 years old and Autumn who passed away 18 mos. ago). That trainer refused to take on Shiloh and scolded me for adopting her because of her behavioral issues and because of her EPI. I was very upset and ended our business relationship.

I found a WONDERFUL trainer here in Tucson who specializes in rehabilitating rescue dogs. Although Shiloh was her most challenging case in the years she has been in this profession…Robin, she rehabilitated her and Shiloh is a whole new dog! She is confident, happy and no longer scared of her own shadow! We absolutely adore her and enjoy every moment!

I wanted to show you her graduation photo. Look at how happy and healthy she is!

I highly recommend New Dogs Old Trix for any of your Tucson clients. Thank you for our little girl!

Boomer

Boomer – Black Lab

January 31, 2012

It’s a great pleasure to nominate New Dogs-Old Trix for the BBB Torch Award for Customer Excellence. Susan Del Signore is an excellent dog trainer and achieves amazing results in a very short period of time with her methods. She operates a very “high tech-high touch” company which is on the cutting edge with any technology that would enhance the situation and a personality and methodology to totally personalize the training for the dog and the owners.

I was first impressed with the wonderful website for New Dogs-Old Trix and felt acquainted and comfortable before I met Susan. There was excellent communication before the training, during the training, and in follow-up. We received daily e-mails regarding the dog’s progress, training vocabulary, and dietary recommendations. Twice Susan sent videos showing him during the actual training walks. Then, we got a printed Training Review when we picked him up.

The follow-up has been completely amazingl Susan has met us at the dog park and made many offers to come to our home or for us to visit her for additional training review.

This exceptional communication is difficult for any business to maintain and New Dogs-Old Trix has set the bar very high. This company and Susan Del Signore certainly merit the award for Customer Excellence.

Bandit

Bandit – Chihuahua

I adopted a 2 year old, 9 lb. male chihuahua mix, named Bandit who was attacked by 2 pit bulls and lost an eye. He had only ever lived outside and my idea was to keep him in the house (except for potty breaks) with my 15 year old male chihuahua mix and my 2 cats. Bandit’s idea of a potty break was anywhere in the house along with getting into and tearing up things, walking on tables, chasing the cats and barking at anyone who came to the house. After 2 weeks of this, I questioned my decision to adopt him. A wise friend told me to call a behavior specialist or trainer or someone who could help with with my now 3 ring circus. She said I could find someone online.

Enter Susan Del Signore! The very first online link I clicked was New Dogs-Old Trix specializing in rescued and adopted animals. I thought that would be perfect! I explored the entire website and called the next day. Susan gave me an hour of her time discussing my concerns and exploring the presenting problems even before I had committed to contract her for training! This was truly a match made in heaven for Bandit and myself! Again, remember Bandit and I knew Nothing!

Susan took him for 5 days but then due to an unexpected emergency for Susan she kept him another 2 days at no extra charge to me because she felt she had not given Bandit her full concentration.

He was a completely different dog when I picked him up. He was calm, knew 12 vocal commands and was mostly consistent in following them. He learned how to walk on and off leash. Susan worked with me on choice of and schedule for food and treats, the importance of walking twice daily and continuing the cues and lessons he had learned. This I have done and my household is now under control and my elderly dog is following along as well. I learned about crating and was able to purchase some essential supplies.

During the training, Susan provided daily feedback via emails and a video of him. She has made herself completely available for any questions I had before, during and after training. She sent me home with a detailed handout of Bandit’s training tips to continue at home.

I am sure I have left things out that happened, but I hope I have said enough that would encourage you to trust Susan with your dog. She loves and knows dogs and will take excellent care of them. My dog was so happy to be a part of her “pack” and so was I! I am enjoying my dog more than ever!

Sincerely,
Dawn Grove

Axel

Axel – Beagle

I adopted Axel, a 1 year old Beagle, to keep my 7 year old Beagle, Penguin, active and entertained. Penguin was trained in Missouri. When I brought Axel into the family, I was dead-set on finding a trainer in Tucson who shared the same philosophy and methods. I found Susan’s website and immediately knew this was a great start. We spoke on the phone at length and I loved how much Susan wanted to know about my plans with Axel and Penguin, and how she could help fit Axel’s training into our family life! She was very focused on customizing her approach to his training, while applying her proven techniques so that Axel and Penguin would be “on the same page”. Axel and I drove out for a consultation and a “meet and greet” with her dogs. I was so impressed at how she interacted with her dogs and how seamlessly she integrated Axel into the pack. It didn’t take long to confirm what I already knew – this is the trainer for me. And Susan is the perfect trainer for ANY dog and owner!

Axel spent about 10 days with Susan. She sent me multiple emails, pictures, and video updates throughout his stay. When I picked him up, I was so excited to see that Axel was the same dog – just better behaved. He was focused on what I was asking and responded to what was requested of him. When I wasn’t demanding his attention, he was still comfortable being the goofy and playful pup I dropped off! Susan made herself very available to answer questions and offer advice for the unforseen roadblocks that Axel and I encountered once back home as part of her lifetime guarantee. Because Susan took the time to “train” ME as well as my dog, I was able to enforce her work and Axel adjusted back into my home very quickly and has been such a gentleman ever since.

Susan is a wonderful woman who truly loves what she does and has a passion for working with dogs in a way they can understand. I have complete confidence and trust in her as a person and as a trainer. Thank you, Susan, for offering your talent!

Hoarding case in St Johns, AZ When I first meet the dogs they were being held at a temporary shelter sponsored by The Humane Society of America at a County Fair Ground. They were the agency that had stepped in to oversee the seizure of the dogs as well as the prosecution of the person responsible. I had been asked to help with behavioral evaluations as well as look specifically at some of the ACDs in custody to possibly bring into our rescue. The conditions of the original property were horrific and grossly inhumane, many of the dogs suffered greatly because of these both mentally and physically

Forrest

Forrest – Cattle Dog Mix

Forrest: When I first saw Forrest at the temporary shelter, he was in a crate in one of the barns. I was told that he had recently been placed there because he was showing signs of recovery. For the first two weeks at the temporary shelter no one saw his face. At any sign of a human approaching he would run to the corner of his pen and curl up around his face so that he looked like a ball of fur. If you tried to touch him he would be so bound up in fear that he wouldn’t move at all, saying in the fetal position until all signs of humans were gone. He could stay like that for hours. No one there thought he’d recover. Then over time he began to respond to a few volunteers and they decided to move him to a place that would have more contact and exposure. They moved him into the barn where all the food was kept and prepared so that volunteers could talk to him and feed him treats throughout the day. By the time I met him he would still lock down in fear in the presence of strangers, though at this point he wasn’t curling up in a ball, he would just sit in the corner like a statue, avoiding all eye contact. He would not take a treat from me but would from a trusted volunteer.

I came back two weeks later to pick up Forrest along with four other dogs. He was still making progress, baby steps as they were, it was still progress. Once he was here at my place I could finally evaluate him in a balanced environment. Forrest’s fear was not only of people but of everything. He acted like at any moment something from the sky, behind an object or even under the ground, was going to swoop in and eat him! He darted all around the yard looking for a safe place to hide. When put in his pen he hid at first in his crate then proceeded to escape the 6×10 kennel by digging, pulling and finally pushing through the fencing it’s self. Once out he found a better hiding place to lock down into and I had to crawl in to pull him out. Over the next several days he calmed a bit, began to trust me and even look forward to me coming out to see him. I did not try to integrate him into my pack because he was going into another foster home of ours 5 days after he arrived.

In his new foster home, he seems to be calmer on his day of arrival. He greeted everyone, played with the other dogs and was in general much more comfortable inside his own skin. We all thought “Yeah, progress!” The next morning he had again chewed through the fence at his new foster home and locked down under a structure in the yard. Over the next couple of days, his foster mom and I decided he hadn’t come as far as we thought and he needed some intense therapy. That’s when Susan stepped in.

Susan had him for two weeks and in that time she was able to take Forrest from a severely panic-stricken and fragile dog into a dog firmly on his way to recovery. Her tenacity and patience with Forrest helped him to overcome huge obstacles that may not have ever been overcome. In two weeks time, Susan was able to do what could have taken months for any one of us to accomplish.

Forrest is in a new foster home, continuing his therapy. He is much more confident in his surroundings and with new people. To meet Forrest now you would have no idea that we was once a quivering ball of fur, afraid to even show his face frozen in fear. He has become a jolly clown, starting every day dancing a jig for his foster mom. I get to see him every night on our walks and he makes me laugh every time I see him! I had told Susan and his new foster mom that my wish for Forrest was to see him happy and free of fear. When I see him now that is exactly what I see. He greets me now with a smile on his face and his tail wildly wagging. Forrest has exceeded all expectations, he is a wish come true.

ADDENDUM:

Well, it’s official! Forrest had a sleepover with a woman who was very interested in adopting him and it was a success! She was adamant that it was going to be Forrest’s decision and not hers and he fell in love with her as soon as I got out of the picture. Even her Mom (:-) fell in love with him during the sleepover, for those of you who had a chance to meet her on Sat. in Flagstaff…

Megan commended us for all the work we put into this little guy to make him such an awesome and well behaved dog. She will be getting him next Monday, 8/8 if all goes well with the home visit, etc. I don’t anticipate any problems with this. Robin – if I forward you her number, could you maybe contact her for this since you are so close? And Randi, can I have her mail the contract and payment directly to you? Her mom will be driving Forrest to Scottsdale so I won’t see Megan again until she either comes up to see her mom or she brings Forrest to a Yappy hour.

And Susan, a special thanks to you for giving Forrest his start in life as a dog! He is a totally awesome dog. He loves life, jumps up in the air, plays with all the other dogs, loves his toys and bones, is not afraid of motorcycles, thunder, quick movement behind him, etc… he is still working on not hiding when strangers come to pat him but Megan is well aware of it and is already working on it by introducing him to more unfamiliar people and helping him not to hide. I feel very confident that he will have a great home.

Thanks for all your support.

Gigi

Gigi – Shar Pei/Pit Bull Mix

We rescued a pit bull/Shar Pei mix puppy, Gigi, that we thought was not trainable. She acted like she had been raised in the wild. We came to Susan as a last resort, before returning her to the rescue agency we had received her from.

Gigi has thrived with Susan’s training and help. She had our “wild” dog under control within 15 minutes of meeting her. After only a few days with Susan, Gigi came home a completely different dog. She is now a “good” dog. She listens to commands, plays well with children and other animals, and is polite to strangers. Gigi loves Susan and is always so excited to go back and visit with her and her dogs.

Suki

Suki – Dalmatian

With Susan’s training and guidance, we have made significant strides to integrate our beautiful, lovable, 4 yr old Dalmatian, Suki, into our family with 2 young children.

Prior to Susan’s training efforts, our Dalmatian was a crazy dog in our house, jumping on the furniture, running down the children, and urinating on the carpet. She spent most of her time in the yard during the day and in her kennel at night, with limited family interaction.

We rescued our Dalmatian 3 yrs ago from a situation where she spent 23 hrs a day in a kennel, therefore, did not have a good social foundation for joining our family as a full time member. We attempted to introduce her into our house to live with us on a number of occasions, but were unsuccessful, with no apparent behavior improvements. Unfortunately, these attempts only resulted in our oldest 5 yr old daughter becoming warier of Suki.

I was prompted to take action, and seek professional help because our youngest 2 yr old daughter is completely in love with dogs, and wanted to be with Suki all the time. After only 6 weeks of a training program designed by Susan especially for Suki, we have witnessed consistent and lasting improvements in her household behaviors. Susan customized a program to target Suki’s in house behavioral problems, build her confidence, and most importantly, to teach us how to effectively work with Suki to become a real part of our family.

Susan’s training methods address the whole problem; meeting with our family, learning our history, advising on diet, providing training tools and equipment, conducting training sessions with Suki in her home, and in ours, with plenty of encouragement and advice, step by step, along the way.

This experience has changed all our lives for the better. Suki is becoming our trusted family dog we always wanted, and we are becoming the family she always wanted.

We highly recommend Susan for personalized, customized, professional, targeted training.

Zoey

Zoey – Border Collie Mix

Marilyn and I wish to thank you so much for bringing about such an amazing behavioral transformation in our mostly-Border Collie, Zoey.

We adopted Zoey from Border Collie Rescue in January 2009. Zoey was approximately one year old at the time. Her background is unknown, but purportedly she came from a household in the Phoenix area to a foster home in Tucson. For about three months prior to our parentage, she was kenneled for up to eight or more hours each day while her foster parent was at work. Since there were some 12 dogs in the home, Zoey got very little individual attention during that time.

Zoey arrived, very high-strung, afraid of strangers, particularly large men (and of me, originally), extremely nervous and destructive of upholstery in the car, totally untrained on a leash, and was an uncontrolled barker, and a sly thief of food and implements from the kitchen counter. Almost at once she destroyed much of the leather upholstery in the rear of Marilyn’s car. When we caged her in the rear of the Suburban she retaliated by reducing the cushion we placed there into shreds, a feat she later repeated with a very tough piece of carpet runner.

Once Susan took Zoey under her wing, everything changed. What a wonderful girl she has become!

Zoey now walks easily and peacefully on leash. In fact, we rarely use a leash out here on our urban/country roads. Off leash, she is extremely well-behaved, comes instantly when called, and “leaves” unsafe or unappealing roadside residue upon command. Zoey “waits” when told and will sit calmly for several minutes until released. She is much improved in relations with people and other dogs. Even in the car, she refrains from barking at passing dogs, cyclists or other vehicles. In fact, Zoey has become our little 54 pound sweetheart.

Susan accomplished so much in such a little time and we are really grateful. She worked a bit of magic with Amigo too.

Roxy & Shanaya

Roxy – Corgi & Shanaya – Husky Mix

After I adopted two rescue dogs, Shanaya and Roxy, within a couple of weeks of each other, I realized their lack of training and socialization was beyond my skill level. I was unable to get them to do anything except what they wanted to do; a whole lot of licking, jumping, fighting, pooping, and digging.

There were socialization issues with humans and other pets, running away, and just plain bad manners with both of them.

This is when Susan entered our lives. I say entered because her dog training has resulted in a dramatic change in our household.

Susan came in with all the confidence in the world that they could become well behaved and happy dogs. She is confident because she is knowledgeable and truly cares about dogs. Susan has shown me how to identify dog behavior in such a way that I can anticipate what they will do next and how to redirect them using corrections and praise.

I most enjoy watching the dogs respond to my 7- and 4-year-old when they train the dogs. The dogs get it and they want to please. Susan has shown us how to interact with our dogs and communicate with them effectively.

The dogs truly are happier and visitors have stopped calling Roxy the “wild dog.” I highly recommend Susan to any person who is serious about having a well behaved and well trained dog. Life is calmer, the kids aren’t afraid, and I am a responsible pet owner because I am providing my dogs with what they needed to be happier and become valued members of our family.

She really cares for animals.

The difference before and after training was night and day. They come when called, don’t jump on people, get along with other dogs and in general are a lot nicer to be with. I highly recommend Susan.
